The precipitous terraces that hang over the River Douro have forever been famed for the production of fortified wine and their unique combination of grape varieties, grown in the lean, schistous soils. The modern winemaking era at Quinta do Crasto dates back to 1615, but its Roman ruins suggest even earlier viticultural activity. Pioneers of quality red wines as well as fine Ports, they have now branched out, or rather up, and their new wine comes from remote vineyards in the high Douro close by the Spanish border. This has all the intensity of a Port - rich, spicy, black fruit flavours, hints of muscovado sugar but with a wild, earthy quality. |
